Great news – you’ve just hired your skip! You’re well on your way to starting your clear-out project and enjoying beautifully clean premises.
But the job isn’t done yet. You need to make sure you prepare for your skip delivery so that the entire process runs as smoothly as possible.
In this article, we’ll help you prepare for your skip delivery with a few simple steps.
Remove Hazards
It may sound a little obvious, but your site must be clear in preparation for delivery, as otherwise the skip may not be left where you require it. It’s also a good idea to check the dimensions of the skip with us prior to it being delivered to make sure it will fit into the space that you have in mind, and ensure that you have cleared a suitable space of the same size.
It is also worth having a visual check for any hazards that may need to be taken into consideration on the delivery route, as well as the placement area. Although you can’t always account for those unexpected hazards that may be encountered on the roads, it would certainly be worth notifying us in advance of any permanent structures that might obstruct delivery, such as low bridges or large trees for example. Skip lorries are large, and require around 3-4 metres of height clearance to deliver your skip safely, so if you are aware of any low-hanging power cables or other similar potential hazards, it’s probably best to let us know in advance of the delivery day.
Tell the neighbours
Skip delivery can be a potentially disruptive process. For example, if you live on a narrow street your neighbours may possibly not be able to get through whilst your skip is being delivered. Also, placing the skip down can be noisy, too, so out of respect to your neighbours, we’d always recommend notifying them of the date and time that you are getting your skip delivered. This will allow them to plan ahead and make any necessary changes to avoid disruption, such as moving cars out of the way so that they can leave for work on time, however this may also assist you with making room for the skip to be placed on the street, if that is what you have planned? It will of course also ensure that you maintain good relations with them, as you never know when you might need a hand with something!
Allow room for lorry manoeuvring
The skip delivery process requires the skip lorry to make manoeuvres that will need considerable space. You should ensure that the area is clear so that the lorry can complete these manoeuvres safely. If you live on a particularly narrow street or you believe there may be an issue making these manoeuvres, you should notify us prior to delivery day.
Avoid manholes
We would recommend that you choose a delivery area away from any manholes. Placing a skip on a manhole can have serious consequences as, in addition to damaging the manhole cover itself, the heavy weight of the skip can also cause flooding due to a backflow of rainwater or damage to the pipes. The longer the skip is left on the manhole, the higher the risk of damage.
Arrange for hazardous waste removal
It’s important to remember that not all waste can be placed in a skip. Hazardous waste requires separate removal. If you have any questions relating to what can and can’t be put into your skip, we’ve provided some clarification here. Please check the list of restricted items before hiring your skip to ensure you don’t place anything prohibited into it, as we may refuse to collect the skip and further costs may be incurred.
